Invisalign®

Dentist in Columbia, MD

Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear aligners instead of metal braces to straighten your teeth. Invisalign® uses a set of individualized clear aligners that gradually pull your teeth into their proper position. They are less noticeable than traditional metal braces because they are clear and can be removed for eating and cleaning your teeth.

Most people want to improve their smile but believe that traditional metal braces are their only option. While wearing Invisalign®, there are no metal brackets or wires to distract from your smile. With Invisalign®, your teeth can be comfortable, beautiful, and precisely aligned in half the time that traditional braces would take. Whether you are a parent considering orthodontic treatment for your adolescent or an adult who has put off treatment for years, Invisalign is a discreet and time efficient option.

Invisalign® can treat a variety of conditions.

Invisalign® can be used to address multiple issues at once, improving both the form and function of a patient’s smile. Common misalignment and bite issues include:

  • Teeth that are crowded or crooked
  • Spaces or gaps between the teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Traumatic or heavy bite

The Advantages of Invisalign® Over Traditional Braces

When evaluating your orthodontic treatment options, it’s critical to understand the benefits of Invisalign® over traditional braces.

  • These are clear aligners. Most people won’t notice you’re wearing them.
  • Invisalign® allows for more precise tooth movement than Invisalign®.
  • It’s easier to maintain good oral health with Invisalign®. You will remove the aligners when you eat, brush your teeth, and floss.
  • These aligners are much more comfortable than metal braces. They don’t irritate your teeth or gums.
  • You’ll save time with Invisalign®. Traditional braces require more frequent office visits to change the archwire and make adjustments. With Invisalign® treatment, the patient only needs to come in for an evaluation once a month or so to ensure that treatment is progressing as planned. Treatment time is frequently reduced as well.

How does Invisalign® work?

A 3D model of your teeth and x-rays will help us establish a treatment plan customized to your needs and determine if Invisalign® is right for you. The treatment plan designed by our doctor determines how your teeth need to move and how long it will take to align them properly. The Invisalign® laboratory crafts your customized aligners after receiving your dental x-rays, 3D model, and pictures of your teeth. You will also be able to see how Invisalign® will progressively correct your orthodontic problems using the 3D model of your teeth.

After the Invisalign® clear aligners have been made, you will receive a set of aligner trays designed to gradually move your teeth into a more desirable position. After wearing one tray for two weeks, you will replace it with the next in the series. Each tray is slightly modified from the previous one. Even though the aligners should be worn throughout the day, they can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

How does Invisalign® feel?

Invisalign®’s comfort is one of the best reasons to invest in these aligners. It is normal to feel some mild discomfort as your teeth shift into a new position, especially when you are wearing your first set of aligners. In a few days, the pressure you feel on your teeth when you first put on a new set of aligners will gradually subside. If you experience any discomfort or pain, please contact us. In order to ensure a proper fit, we’ll schedule an appointment with you to examine your teeth, gums, and aligners.

How long will your treatment last?

The average treatment time for Invisalign® is less than one year, but treatment times will differ depending on the patient’s age and needs. Each case is unique, so after your teeth have been examined and digital images have been taken, we will be able to estimate your treatment time.

Invisalign® aligners are made of what material?

Invisalign® is made of a clear, flexible, thermoplastic material called SmartTrack®. SmartTrack® does not contain any unsafe or irritating compounds (no gluten, latex, BPS, or BPA), and Invisalign® aligners are approved by the FDA. You can straighten your teeth with these customized clear aligners and achieve the smile you have always wanted. They are much more comfortable than traditional metal braces. Our team will conduct a consultation with you before you receive Invisalign® clear aligners to discuss your smile goals and what to expect throughout your treatment.

Who can wear Invisalign®?

Invisalign® can be worn by both teenagers and adults. The clear aligners are used to close gaps between teeth, as well as to treat overbites, underbites, open bites, crossbites, and overcrowded teeth. After examining your teeth and taking x-rays, we can determine if Invisalign is the right orthodontic treatment for you.

What is Invisalign® Teen?

The most common time to straighten teeth is during the teen years. Permanent teeth have fully developed and issues like overbite, gaps, and misalignment become clear. However, your teen may be reluctant to agree to treatment with braces for any number of reasons. The most common reasons teens avoid braces include:

  • “Metal mouth” – the impact of braces on a teen’s appearance can often lead to teasing by peers and reduced self-esteem.
  • Restrictions: Braces require your teen to give up popcorn, hard and sticky candies, gum, crunchy foods, and more.
  • Braces can irritate the lips and gums, as well as increase tooth sensitivity.
  • Effort—teeth with braces are more challenging to keep clean and healthy.
  • Sports, band instruments, and other common activities can be limited or made more difficult when wearing braces.

Invisalign Teen® is intended to provide straighter, healthier teeth without the disadvantages associated with braces.

In most cases, Invisalign Teen® can correct issues with your teen’s smile for about the same investment as traditional braces, and generally requires fewer office visits. For more information or to schedule an Invisalign Teen® consultation, contact our office.

How noticeable is Invisalign®?

The completely clear Invisalign® aligners are often described as being virtually undetectable. Most people will not be able to tell you have them on unless they are up very close. This is a huge difference from the dark metal brackets and wires of traditional braces, or even the texture and bulkiness of clear braces. Invisalign® was designed to be discreet, and with proper care of your aligners, they can remain clean and clear.

Is Invisalign® covered by insurance?

Some dental insurance plans do cover Invisalign® under orthodontic care. If you are not sure about the details of your plan, one of our knowledgeable office team members can check on your coverage. We are happy to explain the amount that your insurance will pay and any out-of-pocket costs you can expect.

What can I eat and drink while wearing Invisalign®?

Before eating or drinking, it is recommended that you remove your Invisalign® aligners. This helps keep them clean and undamaged. With your aligners removed, there are no restrictions on the foods and drinks you can consume! Ideally, you should clean your teeth of any lingering sugar or food particles before placing the aligners back in your mouth.

What is the cost of Invisalign?

Depending on your case—the severity of your teeth’s misalignment and how long it takes to move them into position—the cost of Invisalign® will vary. Upon reviewing your dental records, x-rays, and 3D model, we will inform you of the details of your treatment plan as well as the cost.

What happens after Invisalign® treatment?

No matter what orthodontic treatment you receive, whether it is Invisalign® or anything else, you will be required to wear a retainer. This device is meant to maintain the alignment of your teeth. If it is not used, your teeth can gradually drift back into their original positions. You may need to temporarily wear aligners again if your teeth begin to shift. We will determine which type of retainer is appropriate for you after your treatment is complete.
